WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, March 29th, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) welcomed St. John’s College in Belize as its second associate member institution. St. John’s joins Campion College of the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, which became an associate member of AJCU in October 2006.

Founded in 1887, St. John’s College is a Jesuit junior college that also operates an extension department and a highly rated secondary school. More than 1,500 students are enrolled at St. John’s, which is led by Mirtha Alicia Carballo Peralta. She is completing her first year of service as the first woman president of the institution, of which she is also an alumna.

AJCU president Rev. Michael J. Sheeran, S.J. said, “It’s a delight to welcome St. John’s College as an associate member of the AJCU. St. John’s enjoys a strong historic connection to the USA Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus, which has long supported the Jesuit mission in Belize. Through this new associate membership, the presidents of our 28 member institutions anticipate greater opportunities for collaboration and faculty exchanges that might enhance Jesuit higher education opportunities in both the United States and Belize.”
