(Washington, DC) – Reverend Charles L. Currie, S.J., President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) was the recipient of a special award on January 26 from The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) at CHEA's annual meeting January 24-27. The 2011 CHEA Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes was presented to Fr. Currie for his leadership "in developing and applying evidence of student learning outcomes to improve higher education quality and accountability."
CHEA President Judith Eaton noted that this was the first time that CHEA had bestowed this award, which was established in 2005, on an individual.
“Father Currie has made an extraordinary contribution toward enhancing quality in our colleges and universities, reflecting his longstanding commitment to the best in teaching and learning,” said Eaton.
Fr. Currie has served as president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) since 1997. During his tenure as president, Fr. Currie has worked actively to promote collaborative efforts among Jesuit colleges and universities, as well as with educational programs throughout the world. In August 2010, he announced that he was stepping down from AJCU.
Previously, Fr. Currie served as president of Wheeling College (now Wheeling Jesuit University), as president of Xavier University and in faculty and administrative positions at Georgetown University and Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. In addition to graduate degrees in philosophy and theology and a doctorate in physical chemistry, he is the recipient of 11 honorary degrees and, most recently, the Hesburgh Award from the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and the DeSmet Medal from Gonzaga University.
