INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER/SERVICE/IMMERSION PROGRAMS
All students studying abroad through a Loyola program or exchange must either take part in community service or complete a personal Immersion Research Project.
Mexico
- Mexico: semester of prep, education, teambuilding and fundraising followed by trip doing community directed construction projects, and social and cultural activities and education programs.
Jamaica
- Jamaica: through St. George's College (Jamaican Jesuit) in Kingston, participants experience direct service, interpersonal dialogue, and social analysis. The trip is faith-based.
El Salvador
- El Salvador: weekend in rural community with host family joining in their every day activities and 7 days in San Salvador learning about current issues for the people and work that is being done by various organizations.
Thailand
- Thailand: students teach English in either an elementary school or a university, both of which are Catholic. Also, our semester-long study abroad program in Thailand requires the students to volunteer one afternoon per week teaching English to a class in an elementary school.

Highlighted Program: Our fall program in Alcala, Spain has students taking all of their courses in Spanish at a Spanish university. They live in apartments of eight students with six Spaniards or international students. They have the option of living with Spanish host families as well. Our director organizes various cultural trips and activities for them throughout the semester that are part of a course on Spanish culture and civilization.
Our program in Leuven, Belgium is located at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. It is the oldest Catholic university in the world. Students study there for a full-year with other Belgians and international students. They are required to take one course in Dutch language and culture. The students live in an international house, which is a mixture of our students, Belgians and other internationals (76 students total). The house is community-oriented and there are many activities, meals, trips and other events organized throughout the year to foster a sense of community in the house that allows the students to learn from each other. There are community service options offered through the abroad office at KUL as well as seminars on cultural issues.
All of the students abroad through our own programs must complete a cultural immersion project. Students can either complete community service while abroad including reflections on that experience; or they can interview a male and female from their host country to delve into the cultural differences in religion, social, economics, politics, gender, etc. They must include a personal reflection essay as well.
Study Abroad Logistics:
Requirements for studying abroad: Enforce the GPA requirements that are set by the institution abroad for our own programs. Students typically must have a GPA above a 3.0. Students with at least a 2.5 GPA may apply. Aside from grades, students must submit an application, essay and obtain their advisor's signature. The university must be able to find a full course of study towards their degree and the students must not be on disciplinary probation for the period that they will be abroad.
Financial aid available: For our programs, since the students are billed by Loyola directly, all financial aid applies. Institutional and private scholarships, grants, federal and state grants, scholarships and loans. Federal work-study is the only thing that does not transfer.
Other student services available (i.e. - insurance, housing, etc.): For our programs, all students are billed housing by Loyola (the average cost for a junior for one semester or a year) and we cover the cost of housing abroad. Housing is either a home stay or on the host university's campus, but it is provided by all programs. All students get Emergency Medical Evacuation & Repatriation insurance. For some programs, we purchase local health insurance and for some we do not. All programs come with one or two round-trip airline tickets (depending on the duration of study, semester or year). All programs come with at least one cultural trip-the range for this is very large from a 3-day bus trip to a 10-day trip in Italy. On the trips, all transportation and lodging are included as well as admission fees, and some meals. Most of our programs have some sort of on-site coordinator or director that we pay to serve our students at least part-time. Some programs include meals or a stipend for food, but others do not. All programs are fully packaged, but the perks of each package vary based on the currency conversion and the expenses involved.
INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE CURRICULUM:
Related Majors/Minors/Concentrations: Global Studies (major); Asian Studies (interdisciplinary); Comparative Cultural & Literary Studies (major);
Languages available/ Language requirements: Students must complete two intermediate-level language courses. It is 101, 102 (introductory courses that they can place out of, or start at the beginning) and 103, 104. If a student tests out of 104, they must complete the next level 201. Spanish, French, German, Chinese (limited), Japanese (limited), Italian (no major or minor but many courses).
OTHER PROGRAMS OR INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
The immersion experiences listed above (Mexico, El Salvador, Jamaica) apply to faculty, staff and administration as well as students. Every spring we send a faculty member to teach in our Rome program. Every two years, we rotate a faculty member as the director of our program in Leuven, Belgium. Our business school offers two graduate courses every spring that end in a 2 week trip to business sites in Europe and South America. We offer two a study tour to South Africa and a study tour to India during our winter break.
