John Carroll University/ The Bishop Pilla Program at the Vatican City

The Vatican City program was developed by the Bishop Pilla Program at John Carroll University. The Anthony M. Pilla Program in Italian American Studies is unlike any other in the nation. It stands out as the only program of its kind in the U.S. that focuses on an interdisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts approach, which emphasizes an understanding of the meaning of family, its heritage, and the role of spirituality in one's life. The program examines the achievements of Italian and Italian American intellectual history, culture, literature, philosophy and religion.

The international component of the Bishop Pilla Program takes place at the Pontificia Universita Urbaniana at the Vatican City. Students take classes specifically designed for John Carroll University and taught in English by professors of the Urbaniana and John Carroll University. Courses include: Italian Language, African Philosophy, Ethics, Art History, Papal History, and Literature. Many of the courses involve leaving the confines of the class room to explore Rome's museums, palaces and other historically significant sites.

During the semester students participate on excursions to various parts of Italy. The purpose of these excursions is to introduce student to the cultural differences within Italy. Past excursions included Milan, Pisa, Florence, Venice and Abruzzo.

As a final point, the Bishop Pilla Program combines a rigorous academic course work along with enriching cultural excursions. This combination has made the Bishop Pilla Program at Vatican City one of the most popular programs on campus.
