President, Spring Hill College

The Rev. Richard P. Salmi, S.J., became the 38th president of Spring Hill College in June 2009. He arrives as the college continues to meet the needs of a growing student population, with an eager capital improvement campaign and a new environmentally friendly Student Center.

The Rev. Richard P. Salmi, S.J., became the 38th president of Spring Hill College in June 2009. He arrives as the college continues to meet the needs of a growing student population, with an eager capital improvement campaign and a new environmentally friendly Student Center.

Prior to his appointment at Spring Hill, Salmi served as vice president for student affairs at Loyola University Chicago, a position he held since 2002. He directed a student affairs division that managed numerous areas in student life including student activities, residence life, new student orientation, campus recreation, student leadership development and intercollegiate athletics.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Salmi entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1973. He holds a B.S. in communications from Ohio University, M.A. in speech communications from Bowling Green State University, Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Boston College.

From 1990 to 1991, Salmi worked as a health care provider, social worker and priest for AIDS patients in Kampala, Uganda. He served as vice president for student affairs at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1994-2002. While at John Carroll, Salmi also served as campus minister and coordinator of volunteer programs and community service.

Salmi serves on the Board of Trustees at Le Moyne College and Loyola University New Orleans. He is a founding member and director of the Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities.

Federal Relations


AJCU Federal Relations Network is the lobbying arm of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and comprised of at least one representative from each one of the twenty-eight Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The Network is kept up to date on an on-going basis by the Vice President for Federal Relations on all issues relating to Appropriations, budget, higher education authorization issues and taxes. The Network meets annually in September for a Legislative Conference and also participates in the Annual Committee for Education Funding Legislative Conference and Awards Dinner.

AJCU Conferences


The 35+ Conferences sponsored by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) are affinity groups within the AJCU Network. The Conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and best practices; support the professional development of their members; and present opportunities for AJCU representatives to discuss opportunities and challenges in Jesuit higher education. Most of the AJCU Conference groups meet in person at least once a year, and many of them communicate regularly through an AJCU listserv.
