The Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., President of Loyola University Maryland, brings a wealth of experience as an educator deeply immersed in the Jesuit traditions of academic excellence and the promotion of faith and justice. A native of Massachusetts, he formerly served at a sister Jesuit institution, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, as assistant dean and associate professor of Religious Studies.

Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J.

The Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., who became the 24th President of Loyola University Maryland., brings a wealth of experience as an educator deeply immersed in the Jesuit traditions of academic excellence and the promotion of faith and justice. A native of Massachusetts, he formerly served at a sister Jesuit institution, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, as assistant dean and associate professor of Religious Studies.

Born August, 25, 1955, Fr. Linnane entered the Society of Jesus in 1977 and was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood on June 14, 1986. He earned an A.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1977 and an M.A. from Georgetown University’s Department of Government in 1981 before undertaking divinity studies at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, where he received a master’s degree in 1986 and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1988. He earned master’s degrees from the Yale department of Religious Studies in 1990 and 1991, and a Ph.D. in religious studies concentrating in religious ethics in 1994.

He served as Assistant Dean at Holy Cross from 2003 to 2005 and was named a Loyola University Maryland Trustee in 2000. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the College of the Holy Cross; the Institute of Christian and Jewish Studies; and the Board of Directors of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Fr. Linnane is a member of the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification. In March 2010, Fr. Linnane was appointed to be the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) representative to the American Council on Education (ACE) Board of Directors. In April 2010, he was elected to the Basilica of the Assumption Historic Trust Board, and in July 2011 he was elected Chair of the Board for the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA). He is a former member of the Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Baltimore and former president of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Federal Relations


AJCU Federal Relations Network is the lobbying arm of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and comprised of at least one representative from each one of the twenty-eight Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The Network is kept up to date on an on-going basis by the Vice President for Federal Relations on all issues relating to Appropriations, budget, higher education authorization issues and taxes. The Network meets annually in September for a Legislative Conference and also participates in the Annual Committee for Education Funding Legislative Conference and Awards Dinner.

AJCU Conferences


The 35+ Conferences sponsored by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) are affinity groups within the AJCU Network. The Conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and best practices; support the professional development of their members; and present opportunities for AJCU representatives to discuss opportunities and challenges in Jesuit higher education. Most of the AJCU Conference groups meet in person at least once a year, and many of them communicate regularly through an AJCU listserv.
