Mission and Identity Conference

The AJCU Mission and Identity Conference is composed of those responsible for advancing the Jesuit mission and identity of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. There is no standard university structure for Mission and Identity and some of the participants are Vice Presidents, some special assistants to the President, and some directors of divisions. The conference has three regional leaders selected for rotating three year terms. The regional leaders plan the annual conference. The conference maintains a listserv, which is used by members to gather information on mission practices in the schools.

The conference meeting generally features a keynote address by a local expert on a mission area: vocation, formation of colleagues, board development, faith and justice, being Jesuit in new ways, and spirituality. Each meeting includes sessions which encourage the participants to share their best practices. During the conference meeting, the regional groups generally meet to plan Western conversations, the Heartland conferences and other regional gatherings. The Conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and best practices; support the professional development of their members; and present opportunities for AJCU representatives to discuss opportunities and challenges in Jesuit higher education. Most of the AJCU Conference groups meet in person at least once a year, and many of them communicate regularly through an AJCU listserv.
