The National Steering Committee on Justice in Jesuit Higher Education was created in 2002 with a charge to coordinate, convene, communicate, and connect persons and institutions devoted to justice in Jesuit higher education. (Prior to that date, a national planning committee convened three regional conferences in 1998-1999 leading to the convening of the Santa Clara University justice conference in 2000 and the Loyola University Chicago follow-up in 2002.)
The National Steering Committee convened the 2005 John Carroll University justice conference and the 2009 Fairfield University justice conference. The latter was attended by nearly 300 people from at least six countries. Two-thirds of the attendees at both conferences were new to the national conversation about the faith that does justice. We provide formation to long-time contributors and welcome diverse new voices.
The Conference maintains the Justice Web website (www.loyola.edu/justice), which includes, among much other information, justice initiatives at the 28 US Jesuit colleges and universities, Ignatian spirituality resources and peer-reviewed journals that publish in these areas.
The 2013 Justice Conference, “On Fire at the Frontiers: The Commitment to Justice in Jesuit Higher Education,” was held at Creighton University from August 1 through 4, 2013. Click here for more information and be sure to return to this page for information on the next Justice Conference.
