Mission Statement: The purpose of this Conference shall be: to promote the work of campus ministry, especially within the institutions of the AJCU; to provide the leaders of campus ministry in the AJCU with a forum for discussion and for the exchange of ideas and information pertaining to campus ministry; and, to foster the mutual professional support of its members and their teams.
The AJCU Conference of Campus Ministry Directors began informally in the 1970s, but the first by-laws were established in 1989. The directors of the campus ministry programs at Jesuit colleges and universities meet at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Phoenix, Arizona every other spring. In the other years, the directors meet at a site where they can all visit one or two of the Jesuit colleges and universities. In the years that the directors meet at the colleges and universities, they spend a good deal of time meeting university faculty, staff, and campus ministry personnel. A theme or topic is picked that is particularly relevant to those universities with experts from the schools giving the directors input. When the group meets at the Franciscan Renewal Center, the directors will bring in certain experts who can help them all on topics that are particularly relevant. Some time will also be spent talking about the current "hot topics" on the campuses, including retreats and national/international service trips.
Through a concerted effort to more fully utilize the AJCU Campus Ministry Directors' listserv, the 28 university CM offices have been able to communicate quickly and gather timely data in the areas of CM staffing ratios and budgets; salary information; retreat offerings and subsidies; service immersion opportunities; liturgy and music; GLBT student organizations; and, best practices.
