New Exhibit in the Nation's Capital Honors Women Religious
AJCU encourages individuals to visit a new exhibit in the nation's capital that honors women religious. "Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America" is a traveling exhibit, on display January 15 through April 25 at the S. Dillon Ripley Center - Smithsonian, that showcases the extraordinary contributions of women religious to our country's social and cultural landscape.
"First arriving in America nearly 300 years ago, throughout periods of struggle and controversy, sisters established schools, hospitals, and colleges, and provided other social services that have served millions. Through their enduring legacy and persistent vision, the nation's promise of equality and opportunity continues to be extended to all Americans, regardless of faith, color, nationality, or economic status." [Exhibit Brochure] Included in the exhibit, which is sponsored by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in association with the Cincinnati Museum Center, are inspiring stories about women religious who energized various social movements - the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement and Hurricane Katrina, to name a few - with their courageous and pioneering spirits. Learn more about these special women whose faith propelled them to make significant and lasting contributions to our nation. For more information, please visit: http://www.womenandspirit.org.
Please note that this exhibit toured in Washington, DC in 2010, and is no longer on display.
