Students from Jesuit colleges and universities from across the country gathered at Loyola University New Orleans March 9-11 for an Ignatian Family Teach-In that addressed issues of racism and poverty in the region and encouraged students to confront these issues in their own communities. In addition to the Teach-In, entitled "Rebuilding Communities: Facing Racism and Poverty," which was sponsored by the Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN), many students participated in service activities in New Orleans the week of March 5-9 and March 12-16.

Students from the nation's Jesuit colleges and universities gather for the annual "March for Life" on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Nearly 400 students from 13 Jesuit colleges and universities were in attendance.

Students from Jesuit colleges and universities gather for the annual Ignatian Family Teach-In in Columbus, GA. The Teach-In is linked to the annual gathering that calls for the closing of the School of the Americas (SOA), now named the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC). Graduates of the school are connected to the murders of the Jesuits and their co-workers in El Salvador on November 16, 1989, and with many other victims of human rights abuses.

Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., visits Creighton University, the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) and John Carroll University to celebrate the 2006 Ignatian Anniversary Year that marks the 500th anniversary of the births of Saint Francis Xavier, S.J., and Blessed Peter Faber, S.J., and the 450th anniversary of Saint Ignatius Loyola, S.J., the founder of the Society of Jesus.

The AJCU Federal Relations Network gathers in Washington, DC for the annual AJCU Federal Relations Conference. During the two-day conference, AJCU sponsored a Congressional Breakfast on Capitol Hill, which honored Jesuit college and university alumni/ae in Congress (there were 47 alumni/ae in the 109th Congress).

Actor Tim Robbins chose the 28 U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities to be the first to perform his play, Dead Man Walking, based on the book written by Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, over the course of the 2004-05 academic year.

Saint Joseph's University, Fordham University and the University of San Francisco co-sponsored an innovative videoconference entitled "St. Ignatius in Cyberspace: The Ratio Studiorum for the 21st Century." Twenty-five of the 28 AJCU institutions, as well as at least four international Jesuit institutions, viewed the conference either through the Web, or live via ISDN. The conference archive can be accessed at www.sju.edu/cyberspace.

Twenty-seven alumni from 7 Jesuit institutions participated in the "Jesuit Service Day." Organized by the Sarasota/Bradenton chapter of the Xavier University National Alumni Association, volunteers spent the day painting and doing maintenance and yard work at local charities and community centers.

AJCU President Fr. Charles Currie, S.J. stepped down as the Chair of the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, the council of 50 national, higher education associations representing the different sectors and functions in post secondary institutions. Fr. Currie now serves as the Chair of the Executives of Church Related Higher Education.

AJCU was awarded a $248,525 Congressional grant for the development of a new Center for Online Bioethics Education. In conjunction with the AJCU's Jesuit Distance Education Network (JesuitNET), the Center will work with the outstanding bioethics centers and faculty at many Jesuit campuses to facilitate and help meet some underserved educational and training needs.
