WASHINGTON, DC – The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) has announced the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN) as the newest AJCU Conference. Since its establishment in 2006, JUHAN has sponsored biennial gatherings for students and faculty from Jesuit institutions to collaborate on ways to raise awareness of and respond to humanitarian crises across the world.

JUHAN seeks to advance both undergraduate humanitarian education and the professional field of humanitarian action by exposing students to these areas through academic courses, student leadership workshops, and notable plenary speakers in areas of social justice and international human rights.

AJCU President Rev. Michael J. Sheeran, S.J. said, “Over the past eight years, JUHAN has grown in size and scope to raise awareness of international humanitarian issues among students on Jesuit campuses. We are proud to welcome JUHAN as a member of the AJCU network, and anticipate great collaboration with its Conference participants in the years to come.”

JUHAN was established by three AJCU member institutions: Fairfield University, Fordham University and Georgetown University. It has since expanded to other member institutions, including John Carroll University, which will host the next JUHAN Student Leadership Conference from June 9-12, 2015. JUHAN joins the 30+ academic and administrative conferences within the AJCU network.

Richard Clark, Ph.D., Director of the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Program at John Carroll and host of the 2015 JUHAN Conference said, "We are delighted to hear that AJCU will be providing a home to JUHAN. The mission of JUHAN is certainly consistent with the Jesuit mission of forming men and women for others. We look forward to working with our colleagues at the other Jesuit institutions to further the goal of ending enduring suffering through compassionate humanitarian action.”

Quote of the week

"One of the key phrases capturing the charism of Ignatian spirituality is “to love and serve in all things.” Here lies the key to Jesuit higher education in the 21st century. For a Jesuit university should ask more of its students by challenging them to make Ignatius’ charge—his notion of service—their own."
Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., President, University of Scranton

AJCU Conferences

The 35+ Conferences sponsored by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) are affinity groups within the AJCU Network. The Conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and best practices; support the professional development of their members; and present opportunities for AJCU representatives to discuss opportunities and challenges in Jesuit higher education. Most of the AJCU Conference groups meet in person at least once a year, and many of them communicate regularly through an AJCU listserv.
