Georgetown University

*Mission Statement *

Georgetown is a Catholic and Jesuit, student-centered research university.

Established in 1789 in the spirit of the new republic, the University was founded on the principle that serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs promotes intellectual, ethical, and spiritual understanding. We embody this principle in the diversity of our students, faculty, and staff, our commitment to justice and the common good, our intellectual openness and our international character.

As academic community dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge, Georgetown provides excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional education in the Jesuit tradition-for the glory of God and the well-being of humankind.

Georgetown educates women and men to be reflective life-long learners, to be responsible and active participants in civic life, and to live generously in the service of others.

*Structure *

Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., Georgetown's Vice President for Mission and Ministry, reports directly to the President and serves on the Executive Committee of the University. In his position, Fr. Boroughs, S.J.
develops programs for the faculty, staff and students, which promote the Catholic and Jesuit character of the University. He has oversight for the Office of Campus Ministry and the Office of Mission and Pastoral Care at Georgetown University Hospital, and he serves as the University liaison for the Woodstock Theological Center and the Georgetown Center for Liturgy. In addition, Fr. Boroughs serves on a variety of University committees, works with alumni, and does fund-raising.

The Office of Mission and Ministry has a thirteen member Advisory Board made up of key University leaders whose work supports the Catholic and Jesuit character of the University. This Board meets monthly.

Directly assisting the work of the Office of Mission and Ministry are:
Ms. Jan O'Brien, Consultant for Jesuit Mission and Dr. Tony Moore, Special Assistant to the President for Ignatian Programs.

The Office of Campus Ministry, under the leadership of Kevin O'Brien, S.J., is comprised of a nineteen-member team of Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Orthodox chaplains, twenty-one part-time Chaplains-in-Residence, and several support staff who serve our Main Campus, Med School and Law Center.

The Office of Mission and Pastoral Care at the Hospital, under the direction of Brian Conley, S.J., supports a full-time staff of seven, and Resident Chaplain and CPE programs.

The Jesuit Community and the Jesuits of the Woodstock Theological Center generously support our sacramental, retreat and pastoral programming needs, as well as specific mission-related academic programs that serve the University community.

*Orientation Programs *

The Office of Mission and Ministry actively participates in orientation programs for New Faculty, Staff, Students, the Board of Directors and the Board of Regents. In addition, we regularly speak at annual programs for newly accepted students, Advancement staff, student organizations, and alumni groups.

*Ongoing Educational Programs *

The Office of Mission and Ministry sponsors a wide variety of programs and seminars. Some of which are:

    * The Ignatian Tradition Seminar, a four-part series of 3 hour
presentations which introduces new executive leaders to Ignatius
of Loyola, Jesuit Higher Education and our values. This seminar is
offered at least twice each year.
    * Annually, 12 university faculty and staff are invited to
participate in the 19th Annotation Retreat. For those who have
made the retreat we then offer "Living the Ignatian Charism
Seminar," a seven-part series for faculty and senior
administrators who wish to complement that experience by
reflecting on our shared mission at the University.
    * The Office of Mission and Ministry has cosponsored a variety of
lecture series in recent years including: the "Nostra Aetate"
Series of speakers on Interreligious understanding and a
three-part lecture series by John O'Malley, S.J. on his book /What
Happened at Vatican II/.  In conjunction with Student Affairs and
our LGBTQ Resource Center, this year we sponsored a 4 part series
for students entitled:  "The Sacred and the Sexual:  Deepening our
      Conversation on Campus."
    * Each year we offer an Advent Day of Recollection for members of
the wider Georgetown University and neighborhood community and we
have a 5 part Lenten Reflection Series on late Wednesday
afternoons to all who are interested.
    * Each June we offer the Kenya Immersion Program, a two-week
experience in Kenya for University Faculty and Administrators
co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Office
of Social Justice, Research, Teaching, and Service. Now in its
seventh year, the program accepts twelve participants each year.
Follow-up projects with African groups are varied and ongoing.
    * Jesuit Heritage Week is a student-led program for the University
Community, which organizes over twenty-five events to promote our
Jesuit identity, and involves over 1,400 participants.
    * Each year at the John Carroll Awards Weekend and the annual
Reunion Weekend, the Office of Mission and Ministry provides
educational panels.  This year we offered programs on
Interreligious Understanding, Contemporary Issues facing the
Catholic Church, and Living a Life of Service.

*Integration of Mission and Identity into Curriculum and Academic Programs *

While the Office of Mission and Ministry does not have a direct role in
Curriculum or Academic Programs, a number of our close associates teach
pertinent courses or oversee University-hosted academic programs that
reflect our mission, including:

    * The Catholic Studies Program which involves over seventy faculty
members from a wide variety of disciplines who offer classes with
      explicitly Catholic themes.
    * The Center for Social Justice, Research, Teaching, and Service
    * The Center for Clinical Bioethics at the Medical School, which
addresses Catholic ethical issues in the hospital, Med School, and
      our research centers
    * The Woodstock Theological Center, which sponsors a variety of
programs that involve faculty, students and the public
    * The Alwaleed Center for Muslim/Christian Understanding
    * The Program for Jewish Civilization
    * The Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Institute for Ethics
    * The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA)
    * The Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Chair in Catholic Social Thought is
held by John Langan, S.J., rector of the Jesuit Community.
    * The Ignacio Ellacuria Chair in Catholic Social Thought is held by
      Rev. Peter Phan.
    * The David Lauler Chair in Catholic Health Care Ethics is held by
      Kevin T. Fitzgerald, S.J.

*Spiritual Exercises/Retreats *

As already mentioned, the Office of Mission and Ministry is in its
seventh year of offering the 19th Annotation Retreat to invited members
of the Faculty, Staff, and Administration.

In addition, Campus Ministry offers a Retreat in Daily Life for
students, faculty and staff (a modified version of the 19th Annotation)
and the Office of Human Resources' Chaplain also offers a version of the
19th Annotation Retreat to staff. Campus Ministry annually offers
three-day and five-day silent Ignatian Retreats to students, faculty,
staff and alums.

In addition to these retreats, Campus Ministry provides our students
with over twenty different retreats which reflect the variety of
religious traditions on campus.

*Evaluation and Effectiveness *

All retreats, orientation programs, and special events have an
evaluation process. In addition we are working with the Office of
Planning and Institutional Research and the Office of Advancement to
continually evaluate the importance and the effectiveness of our efforts
to promote the Catholic and Jesuit character of the University.

*Publications and Audio-Visuals Developed and/or Used *

"The Spirit of Georgetown" project places a series of banners that
highlight our Jesuit values across campus for the first and last months
of the school year, and provides corresponding posters to students and
alums and their families; these are complemented by a brochure which
explains our nine characteristics of Jesuit education. The brochure is
now used in all of our University orientation programs.

Two years ago we released a forty minute DVD on the life of Pedro
Arrupe, S.J. to celebrate the centenary of his birth. Another DVD on the
Spiritual Exercises is in the works.

*Miscellaneous *

We are completing the architectural drawings for the Calcagnini
Contemplative Center which will be built on fifty-five acres we have
purchased in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is expected to open in 2012.
We are also planning major restoration work on Dahlgren Chapel on the
main campus.
