Washington, DC (October 23, 2006) - On October 17, President Bush recognized five Jesuit institutions for general community service and for building on and supporting civic engagement in their response to the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005, at an event marking the 20th anniversary of Campus Compact, a national coalition of college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education.

Georgetown University and Santa Clara University were placed on the "Honor Roll with Distinction for Hurricane Relief Service," and Georgetown received a "Katrina Compassion Award for Excellence in Hurricane Relief Service." Four Jesuit institutions were placed on the "Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service": Georgetown, Loyola University New Orleans, Saint Joseph's University and the University of San Francisco.

The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll responds to President Bush's call to service by promoting the civic engagement mission of our nation's colleges and universities. The recognition program was created to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their local communities and across the country through volunteer service.

Several Jesuit institutions are listed on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll including the College of the Holy Cross, Creighton University, Fairfield University, Loyola College in Maryland, Loyola University Chicago, Saint Louis University, Saint Peter's College, and Seattle University.
