Jesuit Institutions Make President's Honor Roll for Community Service

On February 11, 2008, 528 colleges and universities across the United States were recognized for their involvement in community service by the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.  Eighteen of the schools were Jesuit institutions, with nine chosen for the honor roll and nine others selected with distinction.

The Honor Roll is in its second year of publication, and is sponsored by several government departments and the Corporation for National & Community Service.  The schools were selected based on several factors, including the strength of their community service programs, the number of participants on an annual basis and how service is integrated into other academic programs at the institution.

In an effort to recognize and promote service, the Honor Roll is one of several initiatives being taken on by the Corporation.  One other initiative is the Learn and Serve America program, which seeks to integrate service with academics in colleges and universities across America.

The nine AJCU institutions selected for the 2007 Honor Roll were: Fairfield University, John Carroll University, Loyola University New Orleans, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Santa Clara University, Seattle University, University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Scranton. Nine other institutions were honored with distinction: Creighton University, Georgetown University, Gonzaga University, Le Moyne College, Loyola College of Maryland, Loyola Marymount University, Marquette University, Rockhurst University and the University of San Francisco.

"The commitment to service has been a longstanding tradition at Jesuit colleges and universities" said Rev. Charles Currie, S.J., president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU).  "Our campuses also reach out in many ways to their surrounding communities, especially to those most in need.  This is what we try to do in in developing 'men and women for others.'"
