Jesuit College and University Students Show that "To Live is to Lead"
AJCU Student Leaders meet at Rockhurst University for 10th Anniversary of the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference
Washington, DC (August 3, 2006) - Over 200 students from U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities gathered for the 10th Annual National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC), entitled "To Live is to Lead," at Rockhurst University (Kansas City, MO), July 26-30.
NJSLC co-coordinator and Rockhurst University student Megan Gonzalez says that NJSLC is important because it allows students to grow and learn more about themselves, and it teaches students to be leaders in the Jesuit tradition.
"NJSLC focuses on morals and ethics, through several breakout and keynote speaker sessions, teaching students that you must respect others in order to lead effectively and with your heart," said Gonzalez. "Whether they are experienced or beginner leaders, the conference offers something for everyone. It helps develop leadership skills in beginners and enhances the skills of experienced leaders."
In addition to participating in reflection activities and breakout group sessions that covered such topics as Jesuit values, social justice, service, communication skills, spirituality, diversity, and sexual violence awareness, the students listened to keynote speakers, including U.S. Rep. Emanual Cleaver II (D-MO) and Dr. Kathy Humphrey, vice provost and dean of students at the University of Pittsburgh, discuss their perspectives on leadership.
On Saturday, July 29, the students exhibited leadership in action by participating in service projects at sites around Kansas City, including Harvester's, Rosedale Development Association and St. John AME Church. "Jesuit institutions are known for educating leaders in service to society and humanity, whether it's on the local, national or global level," said Melissa Collins Di Leonardo, director of communications for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). "The NJSLC is a wonderful resource for students who want to develop and improve their leadership skills and pursue the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for and with others."
