For more information, please visit: http://www.scu.edu/ignatiancenter/students/immersions/
STUDENT IMMERSIONS Immersion experiences are designed to help students understand what it means to live in solidarity with local and global communities. Founded on the principles of social justice, community, spirituality, and simplicity, spring break immersions offer students the opportunity to live with and learn from communities throughout the United States and Latin America. Ignatian Center staff and/or Student Immersion Coordinators accompany participants on immersions and lead daily reflection with the immersion group in addition to facilitating the group preparation process. Upon return, students are supported as they continue to integrate their immersion experiences. Immersions are offered annually to: Appalachia, Los Angeles, Navajo Nation, New Orleans, Nogales, San Francisco, San Jose, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru. Students are able to fulfill the Experiential Learning for Social Justice core curriculum requirement through their participation in any of the Ignatian Center immersion experiences. For more information about the immersion program, please visit: www.scu.edu/immersions.
FACULTY / STAFF IMMERSIONS TO EL SALVADOR Since 1991, Santa Clara University has sponsored immersion trips for faculty and staff, primarily to El Salvador. The week-long trip brings together a diverse group of SCU faculty and staff from a variety of departments and disciplines across campus for an experience focused on deep listening and accompaniment. By meeting with a cross section of Salvadorans, participants learn about the history and reality of the country and thus about crucial global issues affecting poor areas of the world. A key component of the immersion trip is learning about SCUs study abroad program Casa de la Solidaridad and meeting the many Salvadorans who teach student participants at their Praxis sites. For more information about this trip, please visit: http://www.scu.edu/ignatiancenter/faculty/staffimmersion/.
JEAN DONOVAN SUMMER FELLOWSHIP This fellowship was named in honor of Jean Donovan, an American woman who lived, worked, and died in solidarity with the impoverished and oppressed in El Salvador in the nineteen-eighties. The fellowship is designed to encourage and support students who seek to deepen their understanding of social justice issues through a community-based experience. Fellows receive up to $1500 to support their summer work with a domestic or international community-based organization. The grant is intended to help cover travel, lodging, or program costs. Upon their return to campus the fellows reflect on their summer experiences over a weekend retreat and assist with the selection of Donovan Fellows for the following year. For more information, please visit: www.scu.edu/donovanfellowship.
