INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER / SERVICE / IMMERSION PROGRAMS

The International Marquette Action Programs (IMAP): Punta Gorda, Belize
Through inter-cultural experience, participants come to recognize the things that are common to all people, see the spiritual richness which is often found in situations of material poverty, and develop an understanding of circumstances where poverty exists, both globally and locally. The Les Aspin Center International Program: Africa
Program offers students the opportunity to study in Europe and Africa during Marquette University winter break. The course in “Democracy, Culture and Public Policy” is designed as an immersion experience that allows students to integrate theoretical models of culture and values with first hand observations of these variables in action. MARQUETTE PROGRAMS

South Africa Service Learning Program (semester)
Marquette University’s South Africa International Service Learning Program offers students the opportunity to study for one semester at the Desmond Tutu Leadership Academy (DTLA) and the University of Western Cap (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The program is open to students of junior standing and beyond. The program’s curriculum accommodates students from all academic disciplines. Students integrate rigorous academic studies with direct immersion in the culture through community-based service. Community living near UWC offers students the opportunity to delve more deeply into issues they encounter as they immerse themselves more fully into South African society. Students increase their understanding of the history, culture, traditions and peoples of South Africa through excursions to places of historical and cultural importance within the country. Marquette en Madrid (semester, academic year, summer)
Marquette’s semester, summer or year-long Spanish immersion program. In addition to classroom learning at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a top Spanish University, students will go on guided visits and excursions to sites around Madrid. Students have the opportunity to live in a Spanish home as well as go on guided visits and excursions. Homestays, excursions and on-site resident director. (www.marquette.edu/abroad/madrid.shtml)

MARQUETTE FACULTY-LED SUMMER PROGRAMS

Ghana, Africa – Historical and Cultural
Designed to help students better understand the complexities of the issues facing Ghana today, this three credit program will expose students to many aspects of Ghanaian and West African cultures. The program includes visits to Kumasi, Ghana’s cultural capital and Elmina, the site of the first European slave-trading post in all of sub-Saharan Africa.

Cagli, Italy – Digital Storytelling
Students in Cagli will use classroom and lab experiences to learn about the city. Students will work in teams to explore the community and turn their discoveries into stories through writing, photos, a video and a webpage. Students will also participate in various excursions throughout Italy, including the two-day program opening in Rome.

Marrakech and Fes, Morocco – Islamic Culture
This program is designed to introduce students to the Arabic language and to the study of Islam. Students will gain a first-hand understanding of Islam and Islamic culture in Morocco while exploring the complex relationship between Islam and the West, with an emphasis on cultural, linguistic and inter-religious aspects.

Puebla, Mexico – Universidad Iberoamericana
This six week intensive program includes formal classes, many with Mexican students, at the Universidad Iberoamericana. Students live in private homes with Mexican families and have constant language practice. There are also organized guided excursions to places of interest.

Piura, Peru – Community Nursing Program
In Peru, nursing students have an opportunity to complete their community clinical experience. Students can participate in a wide range of clinical experiences, from primary health care to hospice care to alcohol/drug treatment groups.

London, UK and Prague, CZ – Advertising and PR
This three credit cultural and industry immersion course is designed to bring culture and advertising to life within the context of the global marketplace. Students will spend three weeks abroad beginning in London, a thriving hub of Europe, and moving onto Prague, the center of a swiftly emerging marketplace.
