INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER/SERVICE/IMMERSION PROGRAMS
In the Dominican Republic:
Encuentro Dominicano: Semester Program
- The Encuentro Dominicano study abroad program utilizes the relationships of the ILAC mission to decide on locations for immersion experiences and "proyecticos" (small projects) that the students complete while in contact with the local community. Throughout the semester, students also volunteer on a weekly basis at service sites in and around Santiago.
Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC): Non-credit, Summer and Short-Term Programs
- The ILAC Center in the Dominican Republic is an international, Christian, Ignatian-inspired, collaborative health care and educational organization that exists to promote the integral wellbeing and spiritual growth of all its participants. ILAC programs offer service learning and immersion experiences in the rural areas of the Dominican Republic to professional school students (dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law, physical therapy and occupational therapy); undergraduates; high school students; faculty-led groups; and medical/surgical teams.

Project CURA: Summer, Short term
- Project CURA is a student-led organization for medical school students, which provides health education and primary prevention to populations in underserved countries. Students spend 2-3 weeks during the summer volunteering in medical clinics, hospitals, and rural villages. Project CURA groups have served in Cambodia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Peru, Philippines, and Romania.

Institution's own programs:
- Encuentro Dominicano is Creighton’s semester-long, service-learning program in the Dominican Republic. Students take courses taught by the Academic Director and other visiting Creighton faculty at the ILAC Center. During the semester, students have the opportunity to volunteer in the local community, live with a host family, and complete a service project for a rural community.
- Faculty-Led Programs Abroad are group-based summer travel courses, 2-4 weeks in duration, led by Creighton faculty members. Participants travel together while taking a course taught by the Creighton faculty. Past FLPAs have been offered in China, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.
Study Abroad Logistics:
- Requirements for studying abroad: Sophomore standing, 2.5 GPA, Students on disciplinary probation are not eligible to study abroad
- Financial aid available: Federal financial aid may be portable for any approved study abroad program
- Institutional financial aid may only be portable for Encuentro Dominicano, ISEP-Exchange, Sophia University, Sogang University, Mannheim University, University of Glasgow, and University of Limerick.
- Other student services available (i.e.- insurance, housing, etc.): Study Abroad Fair, Passport Processing Center, Informational Sessions, Pre-Departure Orientation, Re-Entry Programming, One-on-One Advising and the opportunity to purchase supplemental travel insurance.
INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE CURRICULUM

Core Curriculum Language Requirements: Six (6) credits in one language at 100 level if learning it for the first time or three (3) hours at 200 level with previous knowledge of that language.
Institutes or Centers promoting global awareness:
- The Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC) (See International Volunteer/Service/Immersion Programs)
- The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) curriculum is designed to meet the English language needs of students who want to enter the university at the undergraduate or graduate level. At the IELI, students develop the speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills that are necessary for academic success while gaining insights into various aspects of U.S. culture.
- The Asian World Center (AWC) focuses on fostering knowledge and understanding of the economics, culture, history and philosophy drawn from the rich repository of multiple Asian countries. The AWC sponsors the annual Asian Culture Week and other events that promote mutual understanding of Western and Eastern traditions.
FACULTY EXCHANGE/COOPERATIVE RESEARCH
In 2011-12, about 135 of Creighton's faculty and staff plan to travel abroad for professional reasons: to participate in conferences, conduct research,
teach, lead a group, engage in volunteer work, or recruit students. They will travel to Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, Venezuela, Vietnam, Virgin Islands and West Indies.
OTHER PROGRAMS OR INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
International Scholarships and Fellowships
Eligible Creighton students are encouraged to apply to a variety of scholarships and fellowships for study overseas. The Fulbright, Gilman, Rotary, and the NSEP Boren awards are not country-specific whereas others are: The Bosch, Congress Bundestag, DAAD, and German Chancellor awards are available for those who want to study in Germany; for students interested in going to East/Southeast Asia, the Freeman Asia and the Bridging Scholarships are offered; students can also apply for prestigious British scholarships, such as the Marshall and the Rhodes.
International Organizations
Among Creighton’s 200 student organizations, six promote the culture of particular areas or countries of the world: The African Student Association, the Asian Student Association, the Chinese Student Association, the Indian Cultural Society, the Korean Student Association and the Muslim Student Association. Language clubs such as the German-American, the Italian, the Russian and the Spanish also foster the understanding of the cultures they represent. Embracing all cultures, the International Student Association provides a forum for cross-cultural understanding and organizes events, especially the traditional International Banquet and Show each spring.
ENGLISH PROGRAM-INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
Since 1979, Creighton’s Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) has been helping students from different language backgrounds to communicate effectively in English, deepen their understanding of the U.S. culture and prepare for the rigors of undergraduate and graduate studies. Core courses in reading, writing, listening/speaking and grammar focus on language skills across seven proficiency levels, from high beginning to advanced. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) laboratory sessions reinforce what is learned in the classroom and weekly co-curricular activities provide the cultural context for the practice of language skills learned. IELI classes meet Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for a total of 22 hours per week. For greater detail, visit the program website.
- Eligibility: IELI applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have completed high school. (Exceptions are sometimes made for short-term groups.)
- Curriculum: The IELI curriculum includes 33 core courses and 7 levels of proficiency in English--from high beginning to advanced.
- Terms: Five terms of eight weeks each are offered each year, beginning in mid August, mid October, early January, early March and mid June.
