Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1946, Le Moyne is the second youngest of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, and the first to open as a coeducational institution. It was named in honor of Simon Le Moyne, S.J., a priest, missionary and teacher with a considerable influence on Central New York.

Le Moyne College

Le Moyne College provides its students with a distinct education that allows them to explore the meaning and value of life through academics, reflection and service. They are encouraged to ask questions, to think deeply and to look beyond the apparent. Perhaps most importantly, Le Moyne’s commitment to the principle of care for the individual guarantees that students will be recognized and supported for who they are – and who they have the potential to become.

In the nearly seven decades since its founding, Le Moyne has grown and adapted to meet the needs of changing times. The establishment of both the Madden School of Business and McDevitt Center for Creativity and Innovation, as well as the construction of a new 48,000-square-foot addition to the College’s Coyne Science Center, are all examples of several recent initiatives the College has undertaken to prepare its graduates to lead and serve in the 21st century.

The first named school in the College’s history, the Madden School shapes its programs around four key elements – managing complexity; integrating career preparation; encouraging entrepreneurship; and utilizing the global Jesuit network. The McDevitt Center for Creativity and Innovation at Le Moyne represents a new, transformational model for enhancing and integrating research, learning and service at a Jesuit, liberal arts college, while the addition to the science center provides students with a state-of-the-art facility in which to study and conduct research.

The first named school in the College’s history, the Madden School shapes its programs around four key elements – managing complexity; integrating career preparation; encouraging entrepreneurship and; utilizing the global Jesuit network. The College is committed to its founding ideal, "But Love the Truth and Peace," and to providing its students with a well-rounded liberal arts education. Courses in English, history, religion and philosophy remain at the heart of a student’s experience at Le Moyne. Today approximately 2,300 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students are enrolled at Le Moyne full time. These individuals choose from more than 30 bachelor’s degree programs in the humanities, science, nursing, business and education. Master’s degrees are offered in business administration, education, nursing and physician assistant studies.

“Now, more than ever before, the world needs thoughtful, committed men and women, imbued with integrity and compassion, to address the challenges facing each one of us in the 21st century. Le Moyne is in a unique position to prepare its graduates to do just that. Shortly after I arrived at Le Moyne in 2008, I asked the members of our community to engage in a candid, respectful dialogue centered around this critically important question: ‘What must Le Moyne become?’ The OneLeMoyne conversations, as they became known, shaped our vision to become a ‘premier Jesuit College where diverse talents meet to foster academic excellence, integrity and a commitment to justice.’ Four years later, I am proud to lead a talented team committed to achieving this goal.”
