I Make A Difference: National Jesuit Service – Men and Women For and With Others

This initiative seeks to foster the ongoing formation of men and women for others that is at the heart of the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the 28 Jesuit college and universities in the United States. Through meaningful service projects open to all Jesuit-educated alumni, graduates are engaged across the nation in shared service that demonstrates the life-changing and enduring power of a Jesuit education.

This spring, alumni across the country are encouraged to participate in community service projects sponsored by Jesuit colleges and universities. Choose from the following list of schools and click on the links for more information on where you can volunteer and connect with other alumni of Jesuit institutions. (Note: This list will continue to be populated throughout March, April and May, 2013).

Canisius College, Buffalo, NY:

The Canisius College Offices of Campus Ministry and Alumni Engagement, along with the Alumni Association, invite all Jesuit university alumni in the Western New York area to participate in our Spring Community Day of Service on Saturday, April 20th. Join Canisius alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students in a volunteer project at one of several service sites. After a brief registration and welcome at 10am on the Canisius campus, groups of volunteers will head off to their service site for a few hours of service work.

Fordham University, New York, NY and other locations:

United by our common mission to be men and women for and with others, Fordham University invites all Jesuit-educated alumni to join one of several service opportunities across the country this spring. On Saturday, May 4, alumni in the New York City area are invited to take part in a Saturday Service event, part of Fordham’s ongoing effort to help rebuild neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Also, in April, Fordham regional chapters throughout the country will be hosting service events open to all alumni in the area. Projects, dates, and times vary by city and location.

Gonzaga University, Seattle, WA and Dallas, TX:

Seattle, WA: On Saturday, April 27th, Come join the Gonzaga Seattle Chapter as we partner with Rebuilding Together Seattle for a 7th year for another high impact service project! We'll be repairing the home of a low-income homeowner at no cost to the recipient. Projects are focused on those who are elderly, disabled, or toward families with children.

John Carroll University, Cleveland, OH:

The Jesuit Day of Service is a spring service event in which the 10 Northeast Ohio Jesuit institutions—inspired by the spirit of Saint Ignatius of Loyola—lend a helping hand to serve neighborhood organizations in the Cleveland area. Begun at John Carroll University in 2005 as a class project with 100 people, Jesuit Day of Service now engages 750 people serving eight Cleveland neighborhoods. Join us on Saturday, April 27th from 8 am to 1:30 pm.

Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA and other locations:

Loyola Marymount University is celebrating its Fifth Annual Alumni for Others National Day of Service on Saturday, April 20th in Los Angeles and other locations across the country. Several locations have planned a service opportunity on different dates throughout the spring.

Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia, PA and other locations:

Global Community Day is a way for the SJU Community – alumni, current students, faculty, staff, parents, friends, and others – to come together and serve their local communities.  Volunteer opportunities are available across the country, from Philadelphia, to Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Boston, and more.   Service varies by location and non-profit partners.  Volunteer can help mentor children, sort donations, landscape, help with general cleanup, and prepare food, among other activities. 

Dates and times vary by city and location, but will generally take place in the morning on Saturday, April 20th.

Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA and other locations:

Santa Clara University is celebrating the National Month of Service in April with projects for alumni and friends of Santa Clara across California and the West Coast. Service projects will continue in May in Los Angeles and Portland.

Seattle University, Seattle, WA:

Join Seattle University Alumni Relations and Magis for the National Jesuit Alumni Day of Service on Saturday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. You’ll join Seattle University alumni and alumni of other Jesuit colleges and universities in fulfilling our shared Jesuit mission, which is rooted in service, by participating in a volunteer project at one of several service sites. After a brief registration and welcome at Seattle U, groups of volunteers will head off to their service site for a few hours of service work, followed by lunch and reflection on the day.

PAST PROJECTS

Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT:

Join us for our 25th Annual Hunger Cleanup on Saturday, April 6th from 10 am to 2 pm!

Hunger Cleanup has become a Fairfield tradition where more than 500 students, faculty, staff, alumni, family, and friends join together to volunteer for a half-day serve-a-thon at local nonprofit agencies in the Greater Bridgeport area in Connecticut.

Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA and Boston, MA:

Spokane, WA: On Saturday, April 13th, come be a part of a high-impact service project with one of Gonzaga's very best student service initiatives, The April's Angels. Sign up to be one of the alumni who get to partner with GU students to help patch up and fix Assumption School on Indian Trail Road. We are looking for handy and hearty workers who want to give back to their community through service.

Please join us for the 13th Annual Regis University Easter Service Project on Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 10 am - 4 pm. This Easter Basket collection collects Easter goodies for needy Denver-area Catholic children.

The University of Scranton is hosting its annual Alumni Day of Service on Saturday April 13th. Last year, over 400 people participated in our Day of Service, and this year there will be 14 service sites in 12 cities across the country.

Federal Relations


AJCU Federal Relations Network is the lobbying arm of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and comprised of at least one representative from each one of the twenty-eight Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The Network is kept up to date on an on-going basis by the Vice President for Federal Relations on all issues relating to Appropriations, budget, higher education authorization issues and taxes. The Network meets annually in September for a Legislative Conference and also participates in the Annual Committee for Education Funding Legislative Conference and Awards Dinner.

AJCU Conferences


The 35+ Conferences sponsored by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) are affinity groups within the AJCU Network. The Conferences provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and best practices; support the professional development of their members; and present opportunities for AJCU representatives to discuss opportunities and challenges in Jesuit higher education. Most of the AJCU Conference groups meet in person at least once a year, and many of them communicate regularly through an AJCU listserv.
