Fact Files: 2010-2011 Executive Summary

This summary highlights data from Jesuit colleges and universities for the 2010-11 academic year, and includes some trends in that data since 2001-02. Data was gathered with the assistance of institutional researchers on each campus, using information from each institution’s Common Data Set (CDS) and Fiscal Operations Report and Application to Participate (FISAP), as well as additional information requested by the AJCU office. 

Enrollment and Retention

• The grand total headcount of all students at AJCU schools increased by 1.9%, from 213,711 in 2009-10 to 217,760 in 2010-11. The total undergraduate enrollment increased slightly from 132,972 in 2009-10 to 134,421 in 2010-11 (an increase of 1.1%).

• The female / male ratio for enrolled undergraduate students was 57 / 43 in 2010-11, remaining essentially the same since 2001-02.

• The freshman admission rate was slightly more competitive this year than last year.  In 2009-10, the average acceptance rate was 64.3%; in 2010-11, the average acceptance rate was 62.4%. The acceptance rates in 2010-11 ranged from 20.2% to 86.8%. The average percentage of freshmen entering with a GPA of 3.0 or higher increased from 87.5% in 2009-10 to 88.2% in 2010-11.

• The percentage of total freshmen students coming from Jesuit high schools stayed at 7.5% in 2010-11, the same as in 2009-10.

• Schools were slightly more selective in their acceptance of transfer applicants, accepting an average of 46.6% of transfer applicants in 2010-11; in 2009-10, an average of 47.6% of transfer applicants were accepted. In 2010-11, an average of 52.5% of admitted students enrolled.

• For the Fall 2004 cohort, the average 6-year graduation rate in 2010-11 was 74.4%, with a range from 51.0% to 93.3%; the average is a slight increase from 73.7% in 2009-10. In 2010-11, the average 4-year graduation rate was 64.0%, ranging from 31.2% to 90.2%; the average is a slight increase from 62.3% in 2009-10.

• The average retention rate for freshmen has stayed at or above 85% since 2001-02. It was 86.6% in 2010-11, roughly the same as 86.0% in 2009-10.

• The average percentage of minority undergraduates increased slightly from 25.0% in 2009-10 to 26.8% in 2010-11. In 2009-10, the percentages ranged from 8.3% to 65.5%; in 2010-11, the percentages ranged from 8.4% to 66.1%.

Student Life

• In 2010-11, an average 49.6% of freshmen and an average 44.8% of undergrad students were from out of state. An average 86.9% of freshmen and 56.4% of undergraduate students lived in college-run housing.

• In 2010-11, an average 53.3% of undergraduate students identified themselves as Catholic, ranging from 31.3% to 77.0%. On average, 15.4% identified themselves as other Christian, 1.2% identified themselves as Jewish, 1.2% identified themselves as Muslim, 21.1% identified themselves as “Undeclared” and 7.2% identified themselves as “Other.”

• In 2010-11, undergraduate students completed an estimated 2.28 million hours* of community service. On average, an estimated 61.4%* of undergraduate students participated in community service and an average of 20.2% of undergraduate students were enrolled in a student service learning program in Fall 2010.

Faculty, Alumni, Trustees

• The total number of instructional faculty at AJCU schools for 2010-11 was 21,780; the percentage of minority faculty was 11.4%, slightly less than 12.1% in 2009-10. In 2010-11, an average 47.1% of faculty were women, an increase from an average of 45.9% in 2009-10. The average student/teacher ratio was 12 x 1 in 2010-11.

• The average percentage of Jesuits on faculty decreased slightly from 1.7% in 2009-10 to 1.6% in 2010-11.

• In 2010-11, AJCU schools reported 1,928,575 million living alumni; the total number of living alumni at Jesuit AJCU institutions has increased annually from 1,493,528 since 2001-02.

• The average number of trustees for AJCU institutions in 2010-11 was 37. Each board has, on average, 7 Jesuits and 8 women. These two averages are exactly the same as in 2009-10.

Finances and Financial Aid

• The sum total of operational expenses for the 28 institutions was $6.9 billion for 2010-11. The sum total of operational revenues was $7.4 billion.

• The total endowments for 27 of the 28 institutions collectively added up to $8.8 billion in 2010-11. The average endowment for 27 of the 28 institutions was $341 million in 2010-11 (One school did not submit endowment data).

• The average percentage of alumni contributing to their schools decreased slightly, from 17.4% in 2009-10 to 16.0% in 2010-11.

• Tuition and fees rose on average 4.3% from 2010-11 to an average of $34,002 in 2011-12**, with a range from $25,640 to $42,654. The average tuition discount rate for undergraduate students was 43.6% in 2010-11.

• The total amount of federal grants (combined Pell and SEOG) for all AJCU schools in 2010-11 was $146,929,479, an increase from $134,928,811 in 2009-10. The total amount of institutional grants distributed to full-time undergraduate students in 2010-11 was $1.34 billion, an increase from $1.18 billion in 2009-10.
