Executive Summary of the AJCU Fact Files

This summary highlights data from AJCU colleges and universities for the academic year of 2006-07, and includes some trends in that data since 2000-01. 

Enrollment and Retention

  • The aggregate grand total of all students for AJCU schools dropped 2.02% from 208,023 in 2005-06 to 203,811 in 2006-07.  The aggregate undergraduate enrollment dropped 1.39% from 130,985 in 2005-06 to 129,168 in 2006-07
  • The male/female ratio for undergraduates and total enrollment remained at 42/58, having changed only slightly (1%) over the past five years
  • Freshman admission continues to become more competitive: in 2006-07, the acceptance rate was 62.31%, a drop of 4.64% from 2005-06.  The average percentage of freshmen entering with a GPA of 3.0 or higher has increased from 85% in 2005-06 to 86.9% in 2006-07
  • The percentage of the freshman class coming from Jesuit high schools was 8.76% in 2006-07; this has increased 2.6% since 2000-01
  • AJCU schools accepted 46.8% of transfer applicants in 2006-07 [51% had been accepted in 2005-2006], 49.4% of those admitted in 2006-07 enrolled
  • The average retention rate for freshmen has stayed at or above 86% since 2003.  It decreased slightly from 86.74% in 2005-06 to 85.99% in 2006-07
  • The average percentage of minority undergraduates increased from 22.91% in 2005-06, to 23.52% in 2006-07.  In 2005-06, the percentage of minority enrollment ranged from 8.60% to 53.14%; in 2006-07, the percentage ranged from 7.73% to 62.05%
  • In 2005-06 and 2006-07, 20 out of 28 AJCU schools submitted community service data.  In 2005-06, the estimated hours of service completed was 1.7 million; in 2006-07, 1.8 million were completed

Faculty, Trustees, Alumni

  • The total number of faculty at AJCU schools for 2006-07 was 20,597; the percentage of minority faculty increased slightly from 12.0% in 2005-06 to 12.63% in 2006-07
  • The percentage of Jesuits on the faculty has decreased slightly from 1.98% in 2005-06 to 1.86% in 2006-07
  • The average student/teacher ratio has remained constant at just under 13 to 1 (12.56 x 1 in 2006-07) 
  • In 2006-07, AJCU schools reported 1.76 million living alumni, an increase of about 76,016 from the previous year
  • The average number of trustees for AJCU institutions is 37.  Of these trustees, an average of 20.04% are Jesuits and an average of 21.39% are women

Finances and Financial Aid

  • The sum total of operational expenses for 26 of the 28 institutions was $5,575,986,280 for 2006-07 (2 schools did not report expenses)
  • The total endowments for 26 of the 28 institutions collectively added up to $8,794,813,234 in the 2006-07 school year (2 schools did not report endowment)   
  • The average percentage of alumni contributing to their schools decreased slightly from 21.3% in 2005-06 to 20.27% in 2006-07
  • Tuition and fees rose on average 6.5% from 2006-07 to 2007-08; the average cost for 2007-2008 is $28,568.  Tuition and fees have been increasing about 6% since 2001, with institutional financial aid increasing at least that much.  The average tuition discount rate for undergraduate students was 35.02% in 2006-07
  • An average of 81.76% of undergraduate students received financial aid in 2006-2007.  82,912 undergraduate students (77.8%) from all 28 schools reported receiving institutional grants in 2006-07, totaling $982,854,138.  The average institutional grants package for each student was $12,320, which increased from $11,590 in 2005-06.  The total amount of federal aid [combined Pell and SEOG grants] for all AJCU schools in 2006-07 was $71,902,374; the average federal aid package for each student was $4,546
