AJCU President Charles Currie, S.J. Receives Panlener Award from Alpha Sigma Nu

Washington, DC (October 17, 2006) - Rev. Charles L. Currie, S.J., president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), received the 2006 Richard and Ann Panlener Award from Alpha Sigma Nu, Inc., the honor society of Jesuit institutions of higher education, at their conference dinner at Canisius College on October 7.
The Panlener Award is named for Richard and Ann Panlener, the first Executive Directors of Alpha Sigma Nu. Their legacy is the strong foundation that empowers the Society to advance the core principles of Jesuit education, inspiring and rewarding those who best exemplify the qualities of Scholarship, Loyalty, and Service.
In the award citation, read by Mark Kadzielski, the outgoing president of Alpha Sigma Nu, Fr. Currie was praised for his leadership, his commitment to peace and social justice initiatives, his adherence to academic excellence and his continuous support of Alpha Sigma Nu activities.
"It will surprise none of you that [Fr. Currie's] loyalty to Jesuit ideals that is truly inspirational," said Kadzielski. "His unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and social responsibility is seen in what he does, and what he requires of all of us. During his tenure at AJCU, he has emphasized the commitment of Jesuit colleges and universities to educate for justice and has actively promoted the internationalization of AJCU campuses."
We salute Fr. Currie for his leadership and support of the company of honor students, and thank him for inspiring the spirit of all students of Jesuit institutions "to address the world as it unjustly exists and to help shape it in the light of the Gospel.""
Also receiving an award at the Alpha Sigma Nu dinner was Mary Bruemmer, a university volunteer for special projects at Saint Louis University, who received the Peg Fennig Award.
