John Carroll University

In cooperation with the Suenens Center, Doris Donnelly, Howard Gray, Paul Lauritzen, Ed Peck, and Patrick Rombalski are part of a planning committee to arrange an Assistancy- wide [i.e., all the US AJCU schools] symposium entitled, "The Vocation of the Teacher in the Ignatian Tradition." This will take place 12-16 June 2005 in Paris at Centre Sevres. This is a complicated projected because it involves overseas travel, USA pre-symposium organization, and the financial commitment of considerable sums to bank an impressive roster of presenters, including Parker Palmer, John O'Malley, and Michael Himes. The idea was to use the threefold celebration to spark a topic close to higher education, teaching.

In addition, 'Bagging Ignatius' is providing a monthly lunch hour presentation on Ignatian classics, e.g., O'Malley's "The First Jesuits," DeGuibert's "The Jesuits: Their Spiritual Doctrine and Practice," and Hugo Rahner's "Ignatius the Theologian."

Last year we commissioned an original icon of Ignatius, Faver, and Xavier for the JCU student chapel, St. Francis, which we will bless at a ceremony in the second semester.

In the second semester of this year John O'Malley will deliver a Detroit Province lecture for all the Jesuits of the province on the inter-relationship of these three great early Jesuits.

In summary, then, we have a major and expensive project for the summer, a year-long commemorative set of lectures on Ignatian topics, a dedication of an original icon, and a participation on a province-wide event. While we may do something more, we have not spelled this out.

Le Moyne College

Le Moyne has a Novena of Grace to St. Francis Xavier planned, from March 4 to March 12, with a mass, homily and novena prayers.

Also, Le Moyne is planning a liturgical celebration to mark the ending of the Jubilee year. This will be held sometime during the spring 2006 semester (date not set yet).

The college is also having 19 people on campus making Spiritual Exercises, including 6 Jesuits. This began in October and will continue into the spring.

Loyola Marymount University

Guest presentation(s) by Tom Lucas, S.J.

A series of articles in the campus newspaper/alumni magazine about students who have experienced conversion to a deeper level of faith/spirituality in light of the background of Faber, Ignatius, and Xavier at the University of Paris.

Weave themes from lives of Faber, Ignatius, Xavier into vocation promotion.

Marquette University

Marquette will host a 2nd semester Loyola Lecture on St. Ignatius and his companions by Rev. John Breslin, S.J.  Fr. Breslin is an Adjunct Professor of English and College Chaplain at Marymount College of Fordham University in New York and holds the 2005-2006 Rev. Francis C. Wade Chair at Marquette University.  Date of the lecture is TBA.

The University announced the establishment of the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality in December.  The Marquette University Jesuit Community gave the university a $2 million endowment for the establishment of the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality, which will be dedicated to the promotion of Ignatian spirituality among faculty and staff. Blessed Peter Faber (also referred to as Pierre Favre) was among the first companions of Ignatius Loyola and was recognized by Ignatius himself for his talent in giving the Spiritual Exercises (retreats) and his gifts as a spiritual director.

The naming of the Faber Center coincides with an international year of anniversaries for the Jesuits, marking 500 years since the birth of Bl. Peter Faber (April 13, 1506) and St. Francis Xavier (April 7, 1506), as well as the 450th anniversary of the death of St. Ignatius of Loyola (July 31, 1556). Further details on these anniversaries are available at
http://www.sjweb.info/documents/phk/200501-01jubilee_eng.swf.

The Faber Center will build upon the good work of the former Center for Ignatian Spirituality. Its offerings will include retreats, spiritual direction, discussion groups, days and evenings of reflection, and other opportunities for exploring spirituality in everyday life.

Regis University

Regis is holding a Lenten Lecture Series in honor of St. Ignatius.

The speakers are Greg Boyle on Xavier and Jesuit Sense of Mission, Chris Lowney on Ignatius and Jesuit Models of Leadership and Dave Fleming on Favre and Companions in the Lord.

The Jesuit Lenten lecture series will focus on the Jesuit Jubilee year 2006, celebrating St. Francis Xavier, Blessed Peter Faber and St. Ignatius Loyola. We will have a special university-wide celebration on July 31, 2006, the feast day of St. Ignatius and the fall Catholicism lecture series for 2006 will include speakers addressing the jubilee year.

In August, 2006 our new chapel will be completed and the art will include icons of these important persons.  The first Lights, Lessons and Carols performed in our new Chapel in December of 2006 will celebrate in music and dance the conclusion of the jubilee year in the context of Advent and the celebration of the Incarnation and Nativity of Jesus.
